Fair Fares NJ is our statewide campaign to reduce transit costs for working-class communities across New Jersey. By addressing the high cost of transit, Fair Fares NJ seeks to strengthen communities, reduce inequities, and support a more connected and affordable transportation system across the state.
The transportation system we need
Our campaign is calling for New Jersey to implement a “Fair Fares” program that would give low-income riders a discount on NJ TRANSIT fares and ensure that our public transit serves the whole public.
Why we need fair fares now
It’s no secret that New Jersey is getting more expensive, and transit is no exception. In the midst of our cost-of-living crisis, transit riders in New Jersey are once again bracing for higher costs with automatic annual fare hikes. Meanwhile, we continue to see delays and service disruptions erode reliability and accessibility. We are being asked to pay more for a service that falls short.
These fare hikes fall hardest on working-class riders, forcing many to choose between paying for transit or groceries.
By implementing a “Fair Fares” program, New Jersey can build a more affordable future—centered on working-class residents, accessible public transit, and broad economic opportunity.
